In the late 1990s, a French lady, Marie-Amélie Dewavrin, very casually decided to pay a first visit to Malta. Back then, she didn’t know much about Malta other than that it was a small island in the middle of the Mediterranean and that it was a former British colony.”
It was love at first sight for Marie-Amélie Dewavrin, as in Malta, she found things here which went beyond her wildest expectations and imagination. “I realised what a lot of history there is in the Maltese Islands the rich archaeology, the lasting influence left by various cultures. I was amazed at how much there was, the great concentration of historic buildings in such a small country like there is nowhere else in the world.” Other fires stoking this great love for Malta are, according to Mme Dewavrin, the people and the climate.
It did not take long for Marie-Amélie Dewavrin to return to Malta, again and again until one day, while still retaining a foothold in Paris, she decided to make Malta her home. “I soon felt that Malta had given me so much that I wanted to give something in return. Especially where France is concerned, I wanted to advertise and promote Maltese culture so as to create a greater awareness of it among the French. After all, there have been many French connections with Malta, especially during the period of the Knights of St John.”
Throughout these last 2 decades, Marie-Amélie Dewavrin has been keeping herself busy promoting Maltese culture through various events, restoration projects and other initiatives, all of which were self- funded. The purpose of this website is to maintain a record and create awareness about Marie-Amélie Dewavrin’s initiatives towards preserving Maltese heritage.
